Hunter

Music In Exile (MIE037)
Impressed Recordings (IMP151)
Release date: May 30, 2025, Australia
Hunter is a soulful journey through the intersections of Iranian heritage and Australian identity. Sydney-based multi-instrumentalist Ashkan Shafiei, originally from Iran, blends Persian classical traditions with jazz, funk, and psychedelic influences to create a sound that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
The EP features four original tracks and a heartfelt solo cover of “Chi Begam” by the legendary Marzieh. Recorded live with his band, the music captures the raw spirit of Iranian funk through a uniquely Australian lens. The rubab, a traditional Afghan instrument, adds a distinctive texture to the compositions, reflecting Shafiei's journey from the hunter to the wandering busker.
Hunter is more than just an album; it's a sonic reflection of Shafiei's journey as an immigrant artist, navigating identity, memory, and reinvention in a new land. It's a testament to the power of music to transcend borders and tell stories that resonate across cultures.
