Ausecuma Beats
Dakar Bamako

Music In Exile (MIE031)
Release date: Mar 21, 2024, Australia
Dakar Bamako is a vibrant testament to the unifying power of music, capturing the essence of three culturally rich cities—Melbourne, Dakar, and Bamako. Released in March 2024, this album is the culmination of a vision that began during the global lockdowns of 2020. Melbourne-based Afro-Cuban ensemble Ausecuma Beats, led by Boubacar Gaye and Bassidi Koné, returned to their respective hometowns to reconnect with their roots and musical communities. Their journey resulted in a collaborative project that brings together fourteen musicians from these three cities, blending traditional African instruments with contemporary sounds.
The album opens with "Farafina," setting the tone with its infectious rhythms and vibrant instrumentation. "Bamba" and "Dakar Bamako" follow, showcasing the seamless fusion of West African highlife, boogie, afrobeat, and funk with Melbourne's soul, jazz, and dance music scenes. Tracks like "Jeunesse Africaine" and "Yole" delve into themes of migration and identity, while "The Feeling of Dakar (Dakar Vibes)" encapsulates the album's celebratory spirit. Throughout, the ensemble's dynamic interplay and rich textures create a soundscape that is both deeply rooted and forward-looking.
